Debbie is a senior extension associate and program coordinator for the New York Soil Health Initiative. She conducts applied research and coordinates extension activities to assist farmers in adopting more sustainable soil management practices that improve farm productivity and resiliency to the impacts of climate change. Since joining the Cornell Soil Health team in 2022 she has been leading efforts in quantifying and interpreting soil health in perennial fruit crop systems, mainly orchards, as well as the utilization of biochar and other organic amendments. Debbie is also a member of the Cornell Climate Smart Farming Team and serves on the board of directors for the United States Biochar Initiative. She earned her M.Sc. in Environmental Science and International Development from the University of Edinburgh and Ph.D. in Soil Science from Iowa State University.
