Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems (CROPPS) Seminar

  • Speaker: Temple Grandin
  • Time: October 8 at 1 pm ET

Room needs to be created for different minds to contribute in research. Visual thinkers, for example, constitute a far greater proportion of the population than previously believed and a more varied one, from the photo-realistic “object visualizers” like Grandin herself, with their intuitive knack for design and problem solving, to the abstract, mathematically inclined “visual spatial” thinkers who excel in pattern recognition and systemic thinking. A world increasingly geared to the verbal tends to sideline visual thinkers, screening them out in institutions and, consequently, research. Rather than continuing to waste their singular gifts, driving a collective loss in productivity and innovation, new approaches to collaborating with a variety of thinkers in research and innovation will be offered.

She has a PhD in animal science from the University of Illinois and is a professor at Colorado State University. She is the author of six books, including the national bestsellers Thinking in Pictures and Animals in Translation. Dr. Grandin is a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of America. Most recently she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year. The HBO movie based on her life, starring Claire Danes, received seven Emmy Awards.
