Cornell University's School of Integrative Plant Science will host a vegetable variety showcase and pathology twilight meeting Wednesday, August 21, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Homer C. Thompson Vegetable Research Farm, Freeville, NY. (133 Fall Creek Rd. View map.) The program will feature field walks, vegetable trial tours, variety tasting, and dinner.
Tour will feature:
- Chris Smart: Vegetable disease field walk. Field walk will highlight symptoms and control strategies for vegetable diseases including cucurbit downy mildew, cucurbit bacterial wilt, Phytophthora blight and late blight.
- Michael Mazourek: Pepper, squash and cucumber variety showcase. Tour will include ~300 different pepper varieties from around the world, novel winter squash and summer squash types, and downy mildew resistant cucumbers developed at Cornell.
- Greg Vogel: Tomato variety showcase. Trials include 32 pre-commercial and commercial varieties from 9 companies, in addition to showcase of Cornell breeding plots.
- Walter DeJong: Potato variety showcase. Yield trials of chipping and fresh-market potatoes developed at Cornell as well as the Northeast Regional trial of potato varieties developed in NY, OH, PA, ME, FL, NC, MD and VA.
A total of 1.75 DEC Pesticide Credits will be available in categories 10, 1a, and 23.
The program is free and open to the public. Free dinner will be provided.
