Jan Nyrop appointed NYSAES director

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jan Nyrop, associate dean and director of the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, as the Goichman Family Director of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES), effective Dec. 13. Jan served as interim director of NYSAES since March 1, 2017. Based on feedback I received from faculty and staff at NYSAES, Jan plans to appoint an associate director for NYSAES in January 2018.

As a professor in the Department of Entomology, Jan’s research goal has been to advance management of plant-feeding arthropods through improved biological control, informed decision making and enhanced understanding of the ecology of pests and the plants they feed upon.

As interim director, Jan has spearheaded a vital strategic planning process with the NYSAES Executive Committee that has outlined a set of strategic goals and objectives designed to solidify the future impact and scope of NYSAES. He has also worked to align processes and resource allocations between Cornell’s two agricultural experiment stations and to advance strategic faculty and staff hires at NYSAES.

In addition to his agricultural experiment station duties, Jan is leading with Associate Dean Julie Suarez the development of funding proposals through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative for a capital project and programming that will expand CALS’ research and technology capacity while bringing valuable economic development benefits throughout rural New York.

I have been extremely pleased with Jan’s leadership as interim director and will continue to support his leadership in developing and implementing an impactful road map for the future of NYSAES.

Please join me in congratulating Jan on his new role!
