Dean Kathryn J. Boor and Cheryl Gombas

On Monday, Nov. 7, Dean Kathryn J. Boor presented Cheryl Gombas with the Core Value Staff Award for Service-Mindedness.

Gombas is administrative manager for the department of entomology. She joined the department in 2009, streamlining its finances into a logical and effective organization. Not only has she moved the department administration to a paperless recordkeeping system, but she worked to improve efficiency in space allocations. Gombas has also provided suggestions on software designs, facilitated an unrestricted gifts portal for pollinator research and extension, and participated in multiple search committees.

Gombas has gone above and beyond for the department in many instances. One example is when she took on the graduate field assistant position, in addition to her own job, after the department learned that the original assistant was very ill. This allowed Cheryl to better support and supervise the newly-appointed employee.

The Service-Minded Award is given to a team or individual who consistently reaches out to be helpful in a timely and responsive manner; strives to satisfy internal and external customers; and is diplomatic, courteous, accessible, and welcoming.

Gombas joined 12 other CALS faculty and staff who received awards that night in different categories that highlighted the best and brightest of CALS. Learn more about the winners here.
