On Monday, Nov. 10, Dean Kathryn Boor joined more than 100 guests in G10 Biotech on the Ithaca campus for a celebration of the College of Agriculture and Life Science’s brightest stars and guiding lights ­– the 11th annual Research, Extension and Staff Awards.

Nominated by their colleagues and vetted by two review committees, in total 29 CALS faculty, Extension specialists and staff members were presented 18 separate awards. The list of winners is included below, and look for a series of individual profiles on these honorees beginning next week.

This year’s Faculty and Extension Award recipients are:

Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Research (2 awardees):

Angela Douglas, Department of Entomology, for her important contributions to our understanding of molecular symbiosis and her pioneering use of molecular and genomic tools in this area of research.

David Just, Applied Economics and Management, for his outstanding research on behavioral economics as it affects food choices, and its impact on lunchroom practices in thousands of schools.

Award for Outstanding Service to the CALS Community:

Marvin Pritts, Department of Horticulture, for his excellent service in various leadership roles in CALS, including serving as department chair through times of significant change and providing strong leadership and significant contributions to several important task forces.

Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Extension/Outreach (Individual):

Margery Daughtrey, Long Island Horticulture Research and Extension Center, for her tireless dedication to greenhouse-grown ornamental plant growers, her relevant and productive applied research program, and her outstanding record of responsiveness to the growers she serves.

Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Extension/Outreach (Team):

Members of the Cornell Vegetable Program

Julie Kikkert, Carol MacNeil, Judson Reid, Christy Hoepting, Robert Hadad, John Gibbons, Elizabeth Buck, and Angela Parr, for addressing the needs of New York’s vegetable production operations and for the many activities they have collectively and jointly organized to successfully connect Cornell faculty and their research with the real-world needs of vegetable producers.

Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Science and Public Policy:

Joe Regenstein, Department of Food Science, for his active delivery of science-based perspectives to agencies formulating food-related policies around the world, including support to religious leaders, food manufacturers, and government agencies seeking to properly apply kosher and halal food regulations.

Early Achievement Award (two awardees):

Sarah Evanega, International Programs, for her extraordinary leadership in CALS International Programs.

Haiyuan Yu, Department of Biological Statistics & Computational Biology, for his tremendous productivity, validated by his excellent grant and publication records. 

Award for Career Accomplishment:

Alan Collmer, Department of Plant Pathology & Plant Microbe Biology, for his outstanding and lengthy record of research accomplishment that has produced tremendous insights into molecular mechanisms of plant pathogenesis, and for the many recognitions he has earned as a result.

This year’s Core Value Staff Award recipients are:

Adaptability:

Caroline Arthur, International Programs, recognized for being an effective negotiator and good at finding win-win solutions.

Inclusiveness:

Janette Robbins, Department of Food Science, for her role in assuring the continuity of the Food Science Summer Scholars program and for demonstrating a sincere and deep care for students, faculty, and staff alike.

Job Skills:

Adriane Callinan, Laboratory of Ornithology, for her adherence to the highest possible standards of ethics and Cornell values.

Service Minded:

Glenn Evans, Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, for his dedication to serving the greater good—the land grant mission, and addressing the grand challenges faced by society.

Raylene Ludgate, Cornell Plantations, for her ability to cultivate an aura of trust, engagement, support and enthusiasm that is a model for everyone at Plantations and could be a model for the Cornell community.

Stewardship:

Alisa Gardner, Human Resources, for providing the highest possible stewardship to affiliated departments and to CALS. 

Stand-out/Unsung Hero:

Craig Cramer, Horticulture Section, for his courteous and kind demeanor and can-do attitude. 

Steve McKay, Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station, for assuming a much more responsible role in experiments than that of a farm manager, exhibiting steady leadership, and ingenious decision-making.

Teamwork:

Local Roads Program

Lori Budd, Barbara Lockwood, Geoffrey Scott, Donna Simons, and Mark Walker, for the team’s willingness to serve others beyond what they are being compensated for and, through their compassion and empathy for others, building an environment of trust.
