Dean Kathryn J. Boor and Beth Lucy-Speidel

On Monday, Nov. 7, Dean Kathryn J. Boor presented Beth Lucy-Speidel with the Core Value Staff Award for Inclusiveness. Lucy-Speidel is the director of administration for Cornell College of Business and for the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. She has been with Cornell for three years, with her work on the Staff Synergy Group for the Cornell College of Business as the quintessential example of her inclusiveness. Lucy-Speidel was charged with addressing key issues related to the creation and implementation of the Cornell College of Business. She created working groups, obtained support, and ensured consistency of communications around the formation of the College.

Lucy-Speidel has shown consistent support of her staff and pays attention to faculty needs and concerns. She is known to be committed to employee recognition and engagement. She spearheaded the Culture and Community Initiative, which is a committee focused on creating an atmosphere of community between faculty and staff, and also includes community engagement through Dyson Cares. Dyson Cares brings faculty and staff together to work toward common goals, such as volunteering opportunities with the Ithaca Children’s Garden, Catholic Charities, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Loaves and Fishes, and the Salvation Army.

The Award for Inclusiveness is presented to a team or an individual who demonstrates the ability to communicate across differences to create a collaborative, collegial, and caring community. Candidates strive to increase cooperation, honesty, and openness for all; support participation of diverse employees in professional development activities; and actively support work-life integration in the workplace.

Lucy-Speidel joined 12 other CALS faculty and staff who received awards that night in different categories that highlighted the best and brightest of CALS. Learn more about the winners here.
