I am a Professor of Biology at Duke University. My research centers on the evolution and diversity of bryophytes. Over the years I have worked on developmental anatomy of moss sporophytes, heavy metal tolerance in mosses growing on contaminated soils, and taxonomic studies of various moss groups. For the last 20 years my research has focused on peatmoss (Sphagnum) ecology and evolution. Our work on Sphagnum has included comparative genomics, population genetics, taxonomy, and reproductive biology, with a focus on interspecific hybridization.
