In June when President Pollack announced the campus community book read of Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How To Be An Antiracist, we began thinking of ways to engage faculty around the complexities presented in the book. CALS faculty are invited for a sustained dialogue with other CALS faculty where we will critically examine race, racism, the intersections with other forms of oppression, and discuss how we can apply these learnings to our work. We will be dialoguing mostly in small group breakouts with opportunities to connect with the larger faculty cohort.

We ask that you commit to attending all four sessions:

Friday, September 25 2:00-3:30

Friday, October 9 2:00-3:30

Friday, October 30 2:00-3:30

Friday, November 20 2:00-3:30

We are also looking for a few faculty facilitators for breakout groups. If you are interested, please indicate this on your RSVP. Facilitators are not expected to teach or be content experts, but rather assist with guiding the dialogue. Facilitators will be provided with a facilitator guide and will meet prior to the first session.

Please note this particular series is developed to enable a dialogue among faculty. We will be hosting separate sessions for CALS staff. If you have students who might be interested, please refer them to AEM 4940 Developing Racial Equity in OrganizationsThe heightened racially charged landscape in the United States coupled with a pandemic that is disproportionately impacting low income and communities of color prompt a deeper look into the roots of racial inequality, the ways our identities interact within the system of racial hierarchy, the policies that divide us, and the ways we can use our agency for social transformation within organizations. Students in this course will engage with Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How To Be An Antiracist, and apply learnings to help develop racial equity within a local partner organization.
