Networked Printer Installation Steps

There are various ways to install a network printer:

  1. If you have a Cornell-owned PC (that is a joined to the CORNELL domain, i.e. you log in to the computer with your NetID and email password).
    a. via directory listing
    b. via typing server path
  2. If you have a personally-owned PC (that is not joined to the CORNELL domain).
  3. If you have a Mac.

Every printer that is installed on the print server follows the same naming convention:

DepartmentAbbreviation-BuildingRoom-PrinterModel

For example, a Color Laserjet 3600 that belongs to Crop and Soil Sciences and is in 918 Bradfield would appear as follows on the print server:

If you have a personally-owned PC, follow the steps below:

Windows 7 Instructions:

1. Go to the Start button and click on ‘Devices and Printers.’

2. Click on ‘Add a Printer.’

3. Click on ‘Add a Local Printer.

4. Click the button for ‘Create a new port’ and use the drop down menu to choose ‘Standard TCP/IP Port.’ Then click ‘Next.

5. Type the IP address that was provided to you by our IT group where it says ‘Hostname or IP Address.’  The ‘Port name’ information will auto-fill on its own.

6. Windows 7 will attempt to determine what type of printer you are connecting to. If it cannot, try clicking the ‘Windows Update’ button on the following page to search Microsoft’s library for one.

7. Failing that, you may need to manually download the appropriate driver from the manufacturer’s website to have ready and begin the process again.

Windows 10 Instructions:

1. Go to the Start menu and click Settings.

3. Click Add a Printer or Scanner.

 

4. Click on ‘The printer that I want isn’t listed’.

5. Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and click Next.

6. Click the button for ‘Create a new port’ and use the drop down menu to choose ‘Standard TCP/IP Port.’  Then click ‘Next.

7. Type the IP address that was provided to you by our IT group where it says ‘Hostname or IP Address.’  The ‘Port name’ information will auto-fill on its own.

8. Windows 10 will attempt to determine what type of printer you are connecting to. If it cannot, try clicking the ‘Windows Update’ button on the following page to search Microsoft’s library for one.

Submit an IT Support Ticket

If you have a Cornell owned computer that is on CORNELL, in order to install the printer follow the steps below:

1. Go to your Devices and Printers and Click on Add a Printer. Then click on Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer.

2. On the next screen  Click on the link that says “The Printer I want isn’t listed”.Image removed.

3. In the next window click the button that says “Select a shared printer by name”. Next type the following in the window \\sf-agpeit-001.serverfarm.cornell.edu\

 

4. This should start to populate the list of printers alphabetically as shown below.

5. After you type \\sf-agpeit-001.serverfarm.cornell.edu\ you will see a drop down list.  As mentioned above the first thing you are looking for is your department abbreviation If you start to type it you can narrow the list down to just your department. If you do not know your department abbreviation or how a building is abbreviated, we would be happy to let you know.  Once you have the entire printer name in the field, hit next and you should see something like this:


Note: If you are prompted for a user name and password, this is the same information you use to log on to your computer in the morning.

 

6. Click Install Driver. Once that is done, you can decide whether or not you want to use this as your default printer in the following screen

7. Next click on Finish and you are done.

Submit an IT Support Ticket

Follow these instructions if you have a Mac. Each version of Mac OS X has slightly different menu options and these instructions are generic for all versions but your dialogs should at least be similar.

1.  From the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen, choose System Preferences.

2.  In the resulting window, open Printers & Scanners.

3.  If the lower left padlock is locked, click it and enter an administrator name and password to unlock it.  It should appear as:

4.  Click the “+” (plus) icon at the bottom of the “Printers” pane to open the “Add Printer” window.

5.  Click “IP” on the toolbar.

6.  Click the “Address:” field and enter the IP address of your printer.

 

7.  Select HP Jetdirect.

8.  If in step 7 the “Gathering printer information…” stage was successful in selecting the printer driver, click “Add” to create your printer queue and you are finished!

If in step 7 the “Gathering printer information…” stage was not successful in selecting the printer driver, select “Select Printer Software…” from the “Print Using:” pop-up menu. Choose the printer model for your IP Printer and click OK. Click “Add” to create your printer queue.

Tip: Enter the model of printer in the “Printer Software” search field to quickly find the printer software to select.

6. In the resulting window, type the building name where the printer is located into the ‘Location’ field (In this case we will use Bradfield).  Then click ‘Find Now.’

7. You will see a list of all the printers in the building which are listed in the directory.  Click to highlight the printer you want (They are listed as Department‐BuildingRoom‐Model) and click ‘OK.’

8. Your computer will download a driver which can take a few minutes.

Note: If you are prompted for a user name and password, this is your Cornell NetID and password, the same information you use to log on to your computer.

9. Once that is complete, you will receive a confirmation window. Click ‘Next'.

10. You may then decide whether or not you want to use this as your default printer in the following screen. Then click ‘Finish.’

The printer has been installed and will be available to applications after the next time they are launched.
