Getting Ready for Interviews: Reviewing Applicants

Candidates that are interviewed must meet all of the required qualifications. When deciding on why an applicant will not be moved forward for interviews, being overqualified is not an acceptable reason.

Before you schedule your interviews, please let your HR Representative know. They have to confirm that the applicants have work authorization.

There is not a minimum number of candidates you have to interview; however, your decision criteria on whom to interview needs to be consistent. It is highly encouraged that you interview as many candidates as you can.

The Department is responsible for:

  • Scheduling the interviews.
  • Communicating the salary range (100% of Market for the position); is provided by the HR Representative.
  • Informing the HR Representative who will be on your search committee. The College will allow non-Cornell employees to participate; however, there must be a business need. Additionally, non-Cornell employees cannot have the decision-making authority.
  • Reviewing the applications and determine who you would like to interview.

When sending communications to candidates, include the following information:

  • If you require an accommodation to participate in the recruitment process, you are encouraged to contact your HR Representative.
  • Provide the candidates with a copy of the job description.
  • Location of the interview, how long the interview will be, and whom they will be meeting.
