Don Rakow
Retired Faculty, School of Integrative Plant Science Horticulture Section

I conduct research, write, and speak on two major areas: the management of public gardens and their sustainable community outreach efforts, and the human benefits of time in nature for all age cohorts. I direct the Nature Rx@Cornell program, and the nationwide Campus Nature Rx Network.
Interests
Public garden management and social impact
Botanical history
Equitable access to parks and green spaces
Recent Research
I conduct research on the effects of nature experiences for individuals in different life stages, as well as ways in which access to nature can be made more equitable. Among the specific issues I address are: the barriers to nature access for young people of color; the logistics of providing nature experiences to elementary students; the impact of nature experiences on college-aged youth; and ways in which nature is a healing element during the pandemic.
