Jerrie Gavalchin Memorial Award

Make a gift in memory of Jerrie Gavalchin to the Animal Science Excellence Fund

Gifts will be used to establish the Jerrie Gavalchin Memorial Award
which is awarded to a senior majoring in animal science.

Academic and Researcher

Jerrie’s research focused on autoimmune disease and immunology in
animals, with the goal of developing ways to improve animal health and
production. She joined Cornell in 1999 as an adjunct associate professor
in the Baker Institute for Animal Health in the Department of
Microbiology, and in 2003, she became an associate professor in the
Department of Animal Science.

Mentor and Friend

Jerrie maintained the largest undergraduate advising load in the
department, advising on careers in both veterinary medicine and animal
health. Students recalled the hours that she spent answering questions
about course material, advising on career paths and writing letters of
recommendation. Many students said that she always took the time to
learn about their lives and support their other interests too.

“Jerrie was a longtime colleague, an outstanding teacher and dedicated
student advisor. Students will remember Jerrie for her kindness and
great generosity in sharing her time and expertise.”

-College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean, Kathryn J. Boor ’80
