You can log into CommonSpot and deselect 'Open My CommonSpot' on the login screen to enable immediate editing of a page and bypass the CommonSpot Dashboard.

 

This will take you directly to the page you logged into in the author environment and a ghosted pencil will appear on the top right of your browser window. You can navigate as needed and this icon will remain.

 

Once you've navigated to the page you wish to edit, click on the icon to display a menu, select 'Work on this Page' to edit page elements.
