Job Description
The responsibilities include performing daily chores such as feed/water animals, checking and treating herd for illnesses/injuries, cleaning stalls/pens, restocking feed/bedding/supplies, turning animals out for exercise). Maintaining two separate horse barns in good working order by establishing standard operating procedures in compliance with a variety of internal and external agencies. The technician completes appropriate records on a daily basis related to the animal care and procedures in a research environment. Works directly with Principal Investigator and research staff to determine planned matings within herd; perform clinical reproduction to produce desired matings. The technician must interview, hire, train, and supervise undergraduate students as the barn crew who cares for herd on weekends and throughout the week as necessary. Job Qualifications
Required qualifications: B.S. in animal science. Minimum of three years of farm/stable management. Experience and confidence with horses, especially stallions and foals, plus equine clinical reproduction necessary. A good understanding and knowledge of veterinary care and animal husbandry is needed. Experience with operation of farm machinery and horse equipment required.
Individual will be expected to take the necessary training courses at Cornell: CARE for animal handling and housing requirements. Must obtain pesticide license in 1B category in order to treat equids and barns.
