Job Description
Description of Position: The Department of Animal Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking a 12-month, tenure-track position to provide statewide educational leadership for the department's sheep extension, research, and teaching programs. Appointment responsibilities are 50% extension, 35% research, and 15% teaching.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:
- Collaborate with the sheep industry and be a liaison to commodity groups, sate agencies and NDSU faculty to identify and prioritize sheep extension, research, and teaching
- Develop educational materials for in-service training opportunities and provide leadership for statewide extension programs in sheep production and management
- Facilitate the transfer of research results into practical applications for sheep producers
- Develop an innovative extramurally-funded sheep research program including collaboration with scientists on campus, the Hettinger Research Extension Center and other regional and national partners
- Advise undergraduates and actively participate in graduate student training
- Teach sheep-related and other courses as needed by the department consistent with the skills and responsibilities of the successful candidate
- Work with the farm and sheep unit managers to coordinate extension, research and teaching activities, and to provide guidance and direction for management of the flock and facilities
- Foster a spirit of open communication and interaction with stakeholders
- Provide service to the department, college, university and appropriate professional societies within the discipline
Description of Department: The Department of Animal Sciences at North Dakota State University is composed of 24 full-time faculty and 40 support personnel. The department offers undergraduate majors in animal science, veterinary technology, and equine studies, and graduate opportunities in many disciplines related to animal science. Current enrollment is approximately 320 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. Our faculty is nationally recognized for excellence in extension, research, and teaching. Highly productive and dedicated faculty have developed robust research programs in diverse areas ranging from animal production systems to molecular biology. Core researching areas include ruminant nutrition, reproductive biology and meat science. State-of-the art facilities include well-equipped laboratories with ample livestock for teaching and research purposes. This includes a 300-ewe flock on campus as well as an extensive flock at the Hettinger Research Extension Center. Our faculty interacts with county extension agents, area extension staff, scientists at research extension centers, other departments, universities,, state and federal agencies, as well as collaborate nationally and internationally. In addition, our faculty provides leadership in nationally recognized extension and outreach programs, which serve a variety of stakeholders. Job Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in animal science or a closely related field from an accredited institution
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Training in a discipline that meets the needs of the sheep industry and the department
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in an independent and team environment
- Experience related to sheep production with a passion and vision for the future of the sheep industry
- Ability to develop exemplary extension, research, and teaching programs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in conducting extension outreach programs
- Ability to develop and deliver innovative and creative extension and teaching programs that meet the needs of the sheep industry and university students
- Publish research in peer-reviewed scientific publications
- Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding
- Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level
