Job Description
Your job is to be the catalyst for the right things to happen in a timely manner according to protocols and to help achieve efficient, safe calf and heifer flow.
Primary duties: Approx. 70-75% of time on calf barn duties; and approx. 20% on young bulls raised for Alta Genetics and 10% on cows and perhaps other farm duties on a weekly basis. Rosy-Lane has anywhere from 50 to 75 calves on milk at a time.
Days, hours: Work 5 days per week (off Sat. one week, off Sun. the next week; plus a weekday). Hours: 5am to approx 3 or 4pm.
Specifically with calves:
-complete Calf Barn Feeding and chores each AM, following the daily list, start by 5am.
-get all duties done in AM per list for the day, week, making things easy and fast for PM feeding
-help plan, then carry out calf mgt. sheets, with assistance if available/needed
-dehorn while 2-4 wks old in cubicles
-oversee all vaccines for heifers and calves in timely manner
Manage heifer barn:
-check for heats early in AM, ideally 7am for 15-20 min; later in day or during day as well
-walk through every heifer grop each day and twice daily if time allows
-breed heifers
-if needed, assist with raking and scraping out heifer barn 1 to 2 times a day
Cow duties: This will apply for you to step in on the weekend days when you are 'on' for calves.
-assist with breeding on synchronization days
-assist with sick cows - change clothes before returning to calf barn
-as a backup or on emergency call, handle calvings
