CALS Study Abroad 101 and Advising

Step One: CALS Study Abroad 101

CALS Study Abroad 101 sessions are held once per week** during the academic year in 170 Roberts Hall.

  • Every other Wednesday, 3:30-4:00pm
    Dates: 1/25; 2/8; 2/22; 3/7; 3/21; 4/4; 4/18; 5/2
  • Every other Thursday, 2:00-2:30pm
    Dates: 2/2; 2/16; 3/1; 3/15; 3/29; 4/12; 4/26

These meetings cover factors to consider when selecting a program, the study abroad application and approval process, and other important information.  All students are required to attend one of these information sessions before applying for a program or meeting with the study abroad and exchange advisor to discuss personal study abroad opportunities.  No appointment is necessary for the 101 session. Attend only once to get all of the information needed to get started in finding the right program for you.  **Be on time!  Because these meetings cover a lot of information in a short period of time, latecomers cannot be accommodated and will be asked to come back for another session when they can attend the entire session.

Good to know: CALS Study Abroad Information Sessions also satisfy this requirement!

Step Two: Individual Advising

Once you have attended CALS Study Abroad 101 and decided whether to go abroad through a CALS Exchange or Cornell Abroad, you should meet with the respective advisor.

  • For a CALS Exchange, call 607-255-2257 to make an appointment.
  • For Cornell Abroad, advising is done on a walk-in basis Monday-Friday from 1:30-3:00pm in 300 Caldwell Hall (even if you go through Cornell Abroad you must still attend a CALS Study Abroad 101 session at some point before application approval).

Step Three: Application Approval

  • The CALS Study Abroad Advisor reviews and approves all applications to study abroad. Prior to approval, all students must have:
    1. attended a CALS Study Abroad 101 session (see above);
    2. had their faculty advisor sign off on their Part II Proposed Course of Study Form (located on the Cornell Abroad website after you login to program application); and
    3. a printed copy of their Part I & Statement of Purpose when they meet with the Study Abroad advisor.

Students may make an appointment by calling 607-255-2257 or in person at the reception desk in 140 Roberts Hall. Please note: you MAY apply directly to the study abroad program prior to receiving signatures on your Part I & Part II forms.
